The FAU Student Housing Complex design in Boca Raton, Florida, turns the suburban site “inside out”, incorporating a residential “street” that serves as the central spatial and circulation spine of the project.  The design carefully allows the modern character of this “street” to be clearly expressed: one floor up in the air, detached from the apartment blocks it serves, and flanked by palm trees, this pedestrian street has more in common with the elevated passarelle of early modernist designs than the nostalgic “main street” of nearby New Urbanist shopping Malls.  Security, as demanded by the clients is provided, yet with a sense of place that similar housing projects do not achieve.
